"Where green shoots, life begins; where parents and children join hands, future lights up."

–– proposed concept for the Fengxian Jinhui Maternal and Child Community Project

Shanghai HuaDu Architecture & Urban Design Co., Ltd. (HDD), has recently won the bid for the Fengxian Jinhui Maternal and Child Community Project. The new construction project will be located in Nangqiao East, Fengxian District, Shanghai, and will cover a land area of 14,846 square metres, with a total floor area of 55,034 square metres. The aim is to create the first full-cycle "maternal, foetal, new born and child healthcare centre" in China, setting a benchmark for Asia.

The project boasts excellent landscape resources with Jinhui Port on the west side and public green spaces on the east, west, and south sides. The east and west sides enjoy river views, and the open waterfront green belt significantly reduces noise interference on the site, creating a peaceful and comfortable environment for prenatal and postpartum recovery.

Perspective from the green space on the southwest, which offers a calming environment for prenatal and postpartum recovery.

The design concept revolves around the idea of new life, with "sprouting”, “beginning”, “hands holding”, and “future” as key words. The project features unique architectural and landscape design that complements the surrounding urban landscape and creates a thriving urban oasis. It provides the community with an exceptional outdoor activity space that blends the beauty of nature with the yearning for new life.

The landscape architecture and an art installation named "Beginning" serve as focal points in the community's spatial layout, encouraging people to gather and enjoy the open green space on the southwest side of the buildings. The vitality plaza surrounded by the buildings, and the two vitality green axes that run through the site create an excellent ecological environment for the community. This allows the building, landscape, and urban space to interact and coexist in harmony.

The unique landscape architecture and the "Beginning" installation reflects the idea of new life.

The prenatal care centre is situated in the southeast corner of the site, with an L-shaped layout that echoes the postpartum healthcare building slab in the northwest corner, without interfering with each other. This ensures that mothers can enjoy the best sunlight conditions and landscape views throughout their pregnancy and postpartum cycle. The commercial area on the ground floor is enclosed to form an inward courtyard, with its west side connected to the green space. The area offers a diverse range of businesses that enrich the community's entertainment and lifestyle.

The use of suspension, subtraction and setback in the design of the building volume creates a diversity of activity spaces with excellent views. In the elevation, the rhythmic design of louvers on the building façade is treated with details and a coherent language to create an integrate urban interface. The use of overlapping volumes has added to the comfortable and inviting scale of the building, making it more welcoming to all who approach it.
