A virtual project designed by Zhang Haiao and Li Di, two architects from HDD, the Hengchang Li project is part of the Design Campaign of the 2017 Urban Design Festival. Hengchang Li is a nongtang with a long history and also a heritage unit in Shanghai. The old nongtang used to suffer from a range of transportation problems. The designers wish to find an alternative way to change the situation and bring more convenience to the residents.
Designers get inspiration from LEGO blocks, aiming at a flexible approach to present an architecture. Each facilities inside the nongtang can be disassembled and installed like LEGOs with great ease. The LEGO block facilities serve functions like decoration (display), storage, green space and public space.
