HDD
designer ZHU Qixiang became one of the finalists of Shanghai Culture
Infrastructure Design Competition for Young Designers of Year 2016.
ZHU’s
design for Shanghai East Library aimed to restructure the landscape between
Century Avenue and Century Park, create a resourceful public space for
citizens’ interaction. It shaped the library into a swirl spinning up and also
a book opening to the public from one side.
The
design also considered saving energy and embracing the nature. The atrium of
the library design imitated natural mountain landscape with hill and valley.
The concept of Sponge City could also be found in the design as it collected
rain water for an artificial wetland.
