The Xiangyang Cultural and Art Centre is located in the phase one construction area of Dongjin New Town, Xiangyang City. The project borders Tianjian Lake on the south, Binjiang Avenue on the west, Ronghua Avenue on the east, and Guihua Road on the north. It contains four major programmes: public cultural and centre, youth activity centre, women’s and children’s community centre, and art gallery.
The project aims to create an urban park other than a single building: The elevated ground floor provides a comfortable scenic platform; the skylight ceiling made of steel trusses creates a welcoming urban space; the building volume is broken down into three connected parts in response to the programmes and context; the circular atrium offers an open space; an art installation pays homage to the city’s history. People can visit different venues separately while sharing the atrium.
